Castle Valley Docent Led Hike
Across i-80 freeway from Boreal Ski Resort
Posted By: Truckee Donner Land Trust
What we'll do
The Castle Valley hike starts at the Ernest Tschannen Trailhead on the north side of I-80 opposite the Boreal Ski Resort (exit 176). The hike circles the south end of the Valley, follows the Pacific Crest Trail to its junction with the Warren Lake Trail, then, passes near Summit Lake before climbing steeply to cliffs overlooking Frog Lake. The first half is through peaceful forest and meadows; the second half has spectacular panoramic views, but it is unrelentingly steep. There can be wonderful wildflowers, depending on snowmelt and elevation. Total distance is 3-4 miles each way with 1700 feet of elevation gain in the second half.
Bring lunch (which we will probably eat at Frog Lake Overlook), and lots of water, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If showers are in the forecast, bring a rain jacket.
Hiking details:
This is a magnificent, but strenuous, hike that lasts all day.
