About:
Celebrating 25 years and looking ahead to the next generation of Lake Tahoe.
Hosted by U.S. Senator Alex Padilla
Featuring Keynote Speaker Interior Secretary Deb Haaland
This will be the first time since 2008 that a sitting secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior will serve as the keynote speaker for the Tahoe Summit. The theme of this year’s milestone 25th Summit organized with support from the Tahoe Fund, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and Team Tahoe partners is “Celebrating 25 Years and Looking Ahead to the Next Generation of Lake Tahoe.”
Throughout her career in public service, Secretary Deb Haaland has broken barriers and opened the doors of opportunity for future generations. After running for New Mexico Lieutenant Governor in 2014, Secretary Haaland became the first Native American woman to be elected to lead a State Party. She is also one of the first Native American women to serve in Congress. In 2021, Secretary Haaland made history when she became the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary. She is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna and a 35th generation New Mexican.
This one-of-a-kind, bi-state summit brings together elected officials, policy makers, federal agencies, the private sector, and local community leaders to collaboratively address environmental problems facing the Tahoe Basin. The partnerships forged through the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program have been critical to the development of sustainable regional environmental planning, land use and restoration, aquatic invasive species protection and eradication, transportation planning and implementation, and forest health management.
Senator Alex Padilla will be joined by members of the California and Nevada congressional delegations, governors, conservationists, and regional stakeholders. The virtual summit will feature a series of speakers on the challenges the Tahoe Basin faces and the public-private partnerships working to protect and preserve Lake Tahoe for future generations.
