Find Your Line: Backcountry Trip Planning Live Webinar

Hosted by: Blackbird Mountain Guides and Caltopo

Description: Digital mapping platforms place powerful planning tools right at your fingertips- but how do you actually use them to plan your ski day? Join Blackbird Mountain Guides and CalTopo for a 1-hour webinar focused on how to use digital mapping tools to plan your next backcountry ski tour. Topics include the best map layers for winter travel, identifying possible ascent routes, finding fall line skiing, evaluating current conditions and potential hazards, and integrating Caltopo and Google Earth to explore terrain further. There will be a 15-minute Q+A afterwards so come ready to expand your ski tour planning prowess.

Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche

Location: Tahoe Art Haus

Date: Showing every night through Wed Dec 15

Time: Showtimes at 5:00pm and 7:30pm

Description: Film Screening

In this film, a taut autopsy of this disaster, key players dig through the painful memories to relive what happens when nature overwhelms. Buried is produced and directed by Tahoe locals Steven Siig and Jared Drake, who both live in Alpine Meadows. Steven Siig is also one of the Art Haus owners, and co-owner Mark Gogolewski is an executive producer of the movie. The film won the Audience Award at MountainFilm in Telluride, the Silver Audience Award at the Boulder International Film Festival, Best Documentary at the BendFilm Festival and Austin Film Festival, and was accepted into the prestigious Banff Film Festival and Whistler Film Festival. Directors Siig and Jared will be at most of the 7:30 pm screenings for Q&A, along with some of the main characters, through Dec. 9.

Backcountry Safety Summit and Happy Hour Get Together

Hosted by: Alpenglow Expeditions

Location: Alpenglow Expeditions in the Palisades Village

Date: Friday Dec 17

Time: 6 – 9pm

Description: Connect with other backcountry users at this happy hour event that will feature a discussion hosted by Dave Nettle, with professional skiers and riders Michelle Parker, Jeremy Jones, and Elyse Saugstad, along with members of Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue. Beer and wine will be poured by Sierra Nevada and Revelshine with proceeds benefiting Sierra Avalanche Center. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take advantage of discounts for Alpenglow Expeditions’ backcountry courses.

Backcountry Beacon Hunt 

Hosted by: Tahoe Mountain Sports & Tahoe Donner

Location: Alder Creek Adventure Center in Truckee, CA

Date: Saturday Dec 18

Time: 3:30pm

Description: Come have fun learning how to use your equipment and practice using your avalanche beacon. You don’t want the first time you use your beacon to be in an avalanche scenario so come out to practice with yours or use one of the Ortovox state of the art avalanche transceivers that will be available for demo. Tahoe Mountain Sports will be providing practice stations at the educational event where participants will find hidden beacons using the equipment. Warm up with drinks, snacks, and socializing following the event in the Alder Creek Adventure Center! This event is free and open to the public.

Lake Tahoe Snowmobilers Meetup and Beacon Park

Description: The Lake Tahoe Snowmobilers is a 501(c)3 run by a group of volunteers committed to winter avalanche safety education and practice, promoting positive backcountry experiences and snowmobile for all backcountry users, and advocating for motorized backcountry experiences and access for all, regardless of health-status, physical abilities, socioeconomic background, or culture. Join us on the third Saturday of the month at 10am to practice using your avalanche gear with our beacon park, all backcountry users are invited!  If you would like to ride with us for the day, join us at 9 AM on those days to meet and greet other riders and their families, use our beacon park at 10 AM, group up into riding groups at 11 AM based on your riding level to go through the SAC Daily Flow as a group and set your radio channel, then at 11:30 AM ride while learning some new terrain and boundaries, while also improving your riding skills.
