Park at the Hoelter Hall Trailhead to meet up with your hiking group

What we'll do

Truckee Donner Land Trust invites you on an exploration of the Royal Gorge Rim Trail to Rowton arches. This moderately strenuous 4-mile hike leads through several wildflower and bird areas, offers expansive views of the Pacific Crest and the Granite Chief Wilderness, and passes through some impressive volcanic geology. The views from the ridgeline make the two-mile climb more than worthwhile. There are expansive views of Crow’s Nest, the upper parts of the North Fork of the American River drainage, and the Granite Chief Wilderness area.

Hiking Details: Enjoy a mostly moderate hike with some strenuous climbs/descents with an elevation change of over 1000′ at a maximum elevation of 7480′.

What should I bring?

Please wear closed toe shoes and bring bug spray, sunscreen, water, and snacks you’ll need for our outing. Depending on the weather, you may need sun protection (hat/glasses) or rain gear or cold weather gear.

Can I bring my dog?

No. Pets will not be allowed on any of the group hikes. We kindly ask that you please leave your pets at home. Your canine companion is welcome at every Land Trust property that is currently open to the public. Please visit tdlandtrust.org for recommendations.

How do I get there?

From Interstate 80: Exit at the Soda Springs/Norden off ramp. Proceed East about one mile on Old Highway 40 to a flashing light and turn right on Soda Springs Rd.  Continue on Soda Springs Rd about a mile beyond past Pahatsi brings you a dirt road on the left hand side of street, just past Dulzura Road which leads you to the Hoelter Hall Trailhead.  This trailhead provides access for the Rowton Peak and Pt. Mariah trails.

From Old Highway 40: Turn at the flashing light in Soda Springs and from there follow the Interstate 80 directions above.
