Backcountry Camp: Trailwork in Desolation Wilderness

Join the TRTA as we reconstruct the PCT/TRT deep in Desolation Wilderness. We’ll meet at Bayview Trailhead near Emerald Bay and backpack 5 1/2 miles up to our campsite near Middle Velma Lake. Thanks to pack support from our equestrian partners at the Mother Lode Unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California, volunteers will not need to carry tools up the hill from Bayview. We’ll camp out for three nights, spending our days repairing the trail by installing drainage features, cutting back vegetation, and building stone steps. There will be plenty of time for exploration, fishing, and swimming. This camp is limited to 10 volunteers to respect the USFS group limit in Desolation Wilderness.

Please note! This is a true backcountry camp and volunteers should have some prior backpacking experience. A short questionnaire will be sent out to those who sign up requesting information about previous backpacking trips for fun or trail work. Our camp and work site are at high elevation, approximately 8000 feet. If you will be traveling from low elevations or are not accustomed to strenuous activity at high elevation we recommend you arrive in the Tahoe area several days in advance to acclimate to local conditions.
